Common Electrical Problems With Dryers

Problems with a clothes dryer can be frustrating.

Problems with a clothes dryer can be frustrating. After all, no one wants to wear damp clothes that might not smell very good.

This article covers some of the most frequent issues with dryers and offers some prevention tips to provide relief in this troublesome event.

Power supply issues

Tripped breakers or damaged cords can cause the power supply to misbehave. Examine the electrical panel for tripped breakers. Test the outlet with a multimeter. If a breaker trips, reset it and recheck the outlet.

It may also be ideal to look at the power cord and check that it isn't damaged or frayed. If either is the case, replace them urgently to get the supply working correctly. Power supply problems can be seriously hazardous.

Faulty door switch

A clogged, faulty, or misaligned door switch can prevent the dryer from starting or cause it to stop during a cycle. Check and clean the lint filter, as lint buildup around the door switch sensor could prevent the door from closing correctly. Also, inspect the alignment of the switch itself, and adjust it if necessary. If this doesn't solve the problem, replace the switch with a new one.

Dryer not heating

If the dryer doesn't heat up, it may arise from a faulty thermal fuse or defective heating coils. The thermal fuse is an inexpensive part that protects dryers from overheating. Check the thermal fuse for damage and examine the heating coils for continuity.

Thermostat problems

When a dryer's cycling thermostat fails, it will run with the door closed but won't heat up. Consequently, the dryer can't turn off when it should. This can be a fire hazard and possibly damage clothes. Test the cycling thermostat to make sure it's functioning correctly. Replace faulty cycling thermostats to ensure laundry is dried at the correct temperature.

The dryer takes too long

Drying could take too long when there isn't enough hot air blowing through the lint filter. Over time, built-up lint clogs this screen and restricts airflow. Clean the lint filter regularly using a vacuum hose attached to an outside venting opening. Ensure proper airflow by checking venting and exhaust systems.

Noisy dryer

If the dryer isn't entering the spin cycle or the laundry keeps tumbling without going through a complete cycle, one may have to clean the dryer's exhaust duct. The dryer can generate impressive amounts of lint, so use caution when cleaning. Don't create a fire hazard in the home.

Dry clothes and a happy home

It can be a labor of love to care for a household appliance. But all it takes is some education and maintenance tips to keep a dryer running smoothly. One can extend its lifespan by addressing these common electrical problems and enjoy more efficient laundry days. Regular maintenance and timely repairs will ensure a smooth, worry-free experience with the appliance.
